Best of the Rest 2007

ChipperDemon, instead of making a cliche Best of 2007 CD as was earlier declared, compiled a CD of songs that were at one time in consideration for a Fourth Wednesday CD but for some reason (was a song known to the ChipperDemon prior that month, an extra track by a repeated artist, or just didn't make the cut) was not included on the monthly compilation.

ChipperDemon's impression; possibly one of the best compilations comprised thus far.

Tracklist as follows:

1. Restorative Beer - Fiery Furnaces

Was in close consideration for October.

"Restorative Beer" has been voted as a favorite by 1 user.

2. Spend All Night - Tegan and Sara

Was just one too many songs by Tegan and Sarah for August.

"Spend All Night" has been voted as a favorite by 1 user.

3. Dickhead - Kate Nash

Again, one too many.

4. Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode Cover) - Johnny Cash

Was previously known but found it's way in ChipperDemon's playlist and wouldn't leave.

5. Sentimental Heart - She and Him

Was supposed to appear on the December compilation but didn't make it.

6. My Enemy - Soko

ChipperDemon was a little afraid to include another achingly honest angry song by Soko, therefore it best appeared on the Best of the Rest.

7. This House Can't Fit Us All - Little Pictures

This track was actually supposed to appear on the November CD but was somehow lost and left out.

8. Merrymaking At My Place - Calvin Harris

Just didn't fit on the August compilation.

"Merrymaking At My Place" has been voted as a favorite by 1 user.

9. Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car - Iron & Wine

Seemed like over-kill among so many similar sounding tracks on the August CD.

10. Satan Said Dance - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

The song has a great beat but the lack of lyrical content left it behind.

11. Ex-Guru - Fiery Furnaces

The song never seemed strong enough for a CD, until now.

12. Chemicals Collide - Cloud Cult

Aside from the great consonance of that track and artist, the song is another good creation by Cloud Cult and it simply just did not fit on the August Compilation.

13. We Are Gods! We Are Wolves - Le Loup

Similar to Angel and a Borrowed Car, the track would have brought that sound to a forefront that would have decreased the merrit of the August compilation as a whole.

14. Be Good or Be Gone - Fionn Regan

At the time, ChipperDemon had grown tired of this track within the month of discovery but it turns out that after a little time away from it, it's good.

15. Where Does the Good Go? - Tegan and Sara

Again, just one track too many by this artist.

16. Mouthwash - Kate Nash

By this point, ChipperDemon has almost included all of Kate Nash's songs on the CD's.

17. White Dove - John Vanderslice

The track simply did not feel strong enough, and still doesn't to some degree.

18. Disco Heat - Calvin Harris

Calvin Harris was by far one of the best artists that ChipperDemon had the privilege of stumbling upon and sadly did not appear at the frequency he deserved... till now.

Bonus Track
Acceptable in the 80's (Calvin Harris cover) - The Editors
Acceptable in the 80's was quite an epic track from August and this cover has quite the unexpected sound that oddly seems to compliment it.

"1. Restorative Beer - Fiery Furnaces
Kinda surprised just how far into Beatles-based pop this veered. I usually think of Fiery Furnaces as leaning more towards the dancier end of things than this, not that that's a bad thing at all. I dug it.

2. Spend All Night - Tegan and Sara
I didn't have a tracklist in front of me with my first listen, and the smoldering vocals and country-skewed instrumentation left me thinking for a brief moment there that this was Neko Case. I quickly clued in, although I still think "Spend All Night" would've been a comfortable fit on Case's "Blacklisted".

3. Dickhead - Kate Nash
Really got into the slow-burning groove here. Has asking anyone to stop being a dickhead made him stop fucking up situations?

4. Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode Cover) - Johnny Cash
Y'know, as many, many times as I've heard both the Depeche Mode original and this cover, I always thought the lyric was "reach out and touch me", so I've been kind of botching a key component of the song for a lifetime now.

5. Sentimental Heart - She and Him
Another track off one of my favorite albums of last year. "Sentimental Heart" isn't one of my favorites, but I adore the strings and sleigh bells.

6. My Enemy - Soko
Unflinching and fiery. Even moreso in a live setting, that pent-up powderkeg of frustration sounds as if it's on the brink of exploding.

7. This House Can't Fit Us All - Little Pictures
Cute, chirping '80s synth-pop.

8. Merrymaking At My Place - Calvin Harris
What a difference a bassy "oh!" -- or, um, seventy of 'em -- can make. I'm also digging that meaty bass groove, and this whirring, otherworldly synth sound is something I've spent more time than I'd like to admit trying to mimic on my Moog.

9. Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car - Iron & Wine
I usually shrug Iron & Wine off as Sad Bastard Music (and probably unfairly...), but I do like this one: the resounding low-end (although I can't pick out the bass guitar above the thundering toms), the layers of harmonies, and the midtempo bob of the plinking keys and acoustic guitars.

10. Satan Said Dance - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I'm enthralled by that synth sound, but "Satan Said Dance" almost doesn't sound like a song, though: just a drummer locked into a great hi-hat-and-snare groove and a keyboardist poking around at a sprawling array of knobs on a bank of keyboards.

11. Ex-Guru - Fiery Furnaces
A solid vocal melody and whirring keys make for a pretty catchy song, and I'm digging the flute.

12. Chemicals Collide - Cloud Cult
Adam absolutely adores all things in any way alliterative.

13. We Are Gods! We Are Wolves - Le Loup
The rats are coming! The werewolves are here! Another modest but consistent headbob thanks to the handclaps and bouncy, chirping synths.

14. Be Good or Be Gone - Fionn Regan
Not my usual speed but lilting and lovely just the same. "Be Good or Be Gone" is my favorite of the two Fionn Regan songs that have made their way onto ChipperDemon so far.

15. Where Does the Good Go? - Tegan and Sara
The very opening note keeps bringing to mind XTC's "Senses Working Overtime". Like the Kate Nash song that follows, it's appreciated to hear a very different side of the same artists on the same CD.

16. Mouthwash - Kate Nash
Nice to have a more upbeat counterpoint to "Dickhead", and I'm especially floored by the ending.

17. White Dove - John Vanderslice
"White Dove" is okay, but it sounds a bit too much like a lo-fi marriage of Colin Meloy and The Shins. There's not enough to distinguish it from an awful lot of other songs floating around the ether...

18. Disco Heat - Calvin Harris
"Disco Heat" is less spastic than the other Calvin Harris songs I've heard. I think I'd probably like it more if I hadn't dived in with a different set of expectations.

19. BONUS TRACK - Acceptable in the 80's (Calvin Harris cover) - The Editors
I'm frequently intrigued by covers that yank the steering wheel in an altogether different direction than the original."

Fourth Wednesday Treaty

At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
