I Didn't Make a Youtube Video of it But... Josie-Bob: Balls and Boobs

January's CD seemed to come up pretty fast after the release of the Best of the Rest 2007 but it doesn't suffer from neglect by any means.

1. Time to Pretend - MGMT

The best beat on the compilation.

2. Go Go Gadget Heart - Birdie Busch

Track title says it all.

3. Heavy - The Blacks

They just got that sound that is good.

4. Fluorescent Adolescent (Arctic Monkeys cover) - Kate Nash

Kate Nash has been doing a lot of covers lately but this is the best one as of it.

5. Jimmy (M.I.A. cover) - Of Montreal

Of Montreal schools M.I.A. in this cover. It's just an awesome song

6. Tonight - Lykke Li

For some reason it just resonates.

7. Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap

Possibly one of the most poetic intro lyrics: "Where were we? What the hell is going on? The dust has only just begun to form crop circles in the carpet."

8. Go to Hell - Scary Mansion

Seriously, go to Hell. This song has an eerie awesomeness to it.

9. Normal Guy - Jon Lajoie

Not a very serious rap song but it's just funny to listen to.

10. Elegant Walk - The Blacks

Best song of The Blacks featured on this compilation.

11. Down to Rest - O' Death

Emo.

12. Wraith Pinned to the Mist & Other Games - Of Montreal

Outback Steakhouse?

13. Rumors - Josh Ritter

Josh Ritter is good and this song proves it

14. Wasted - Angus and Julia Stone

This song may appear on the soundtrack to Closer... maybe. It's included on the compilation just to test out this theory.

15. Party Down the Hall - Stone Coyotes

Sheryl Crow has a new band?

16. Despite What You've Been Told - The Two Gallants

Emo2.

17. Waiting on Her - The Blacks

They just have that sound.

"1. Time to Pretend - MGMT
I've stumbled upon this song twice while reviewing Blu-ray discs; it opened '21' and was featured pretty prominently in 'Sex Drive'. Why do I find that worth mentioning here? No idea. "Time to Pretend" as a whole is pretty amazing, but the driving riff of that chirping synth in particular grabs me.

2. Go Go Gadget Heart - Birdie Busch
Random: when I was really young (6? maybe 7?), I had a huge crush on Penny from 'Inspector Gadget'. Since I was even programming all the way back then, I wrote an extremely simplistic choose-your-own-adventure program in BASIC in which Penny and I were trying to thwart a nefarious scheme by Dr. Klaw to hold the world hostage with a weather control device. Um, it wasn't very good, in stark contrast to this pretty terrific song. I'll be alliterative, befitting an artist named Birdie Busch: beautiful, bouncy, buoyant, and bobbing. If I could've found some way to shoehorn "swaying" in there with the letter "B", I'd bet I would have.

3. Heavy - The Blacks
A pounding low-end, airy and distorted guitars, clipped and distant vox...it sounds firmly rooted in '90s alt-rock, but seeing as how I kinda like at least this flavor of '90s alt-rock and all, that's not entirely a bad thing. Three for three so far.

4. Fluorescent Adolescent (Arctic Monkeys cover) - Kate Nash
I'm either not familiar with the original or Kate Nash is doing such a marvelous job making it her own that I don't recognize "Fluorescent Adolescent" straight off the bat. I really love its kinetic energy no matter where it came from.

5. Jimmy (M.I.A. cover) - Of Montreal
Ditto on the lack of familiarity but liking-regardless. I really think I'm starting to warm up to the new Of Montreal, although by "new", I guess I mean where they've been for the past five years now which wouldn't make it new by any reasonable definition of the word.

6. Tonight - Lykke Li
I'm generally not all that keen on songs quite this spare and repetitive, but I think it works in this case, fleshing out a sincere sense of longing.

7. Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap
Electronic a capella? I never would have thought a song accompanied by nothing but vocoder harmonies could be this powerful.

8. Go to Hell - Scary Mansion
There's something about being told to "go to hell" that seems so much more unsettling and sincere when there's no seething anger or anything behind it.

9. Normal Guy - Jon Lajoie
"...and I make pretty good spaghetti sauce, motherfucker!" The lyrics are pretty brilliant in this counterpoint to the boasting-'n-bling that normally spring to mind with hip-hop.

10. Elegant Walk - The Blacks
I think I'd point to this as my least favorite of the three Blacks songs on here.

11. Down to Rest - O' Death
Kicking off with a graveyard banjo and vocals that are kinda like a country-fried Clap Your Hands..., "Down to Rest" kind of caught me off-guard when it first exploded with the fiddle, booming drums, and classic country instrumentation.

12. Wraith Pinned to the Mist & Other Games - Of Montreal
Killer bass line...is it flanged, at least at the outset? I like to pretend I know what I'm talking about sometimes. I really do think I'm starting to come around on the synth-drenched Of Montreal...

13. Rumors - Josh Ritter
I know everyone the world over loves Josh Ritter -- or, at least, everyone who's heard Josh Ritter gushes over him -- but even after three listens, "Rumors" didn't really make much of an impression with me.

14. Wasted - Angus and Julia Stone
The vocals strike me as being in the same vein as CocoRosie and Joanna Newsom, and that's really not my thing so much.

15. Party Down the Hall - Stone Coyotes
There's nothing all that special about them, but I'm kinda digging the muscular beat and guitars. The lyrics start off as pretty daft but eventually get much better, especially when the song winds up in a cornfield...?

16. Despite What You've Been Told - The Two Gallants
"Despite What You've Been Told" sounds as if the band is bursting at the seams to let it all out. It never really gets the release it seems to want, though.

17. Waiting on Her - The Blacks
I could tell from the first few haunting notes that I'd really like this one.

18. BONUS TRACK - Normal Guy 2 - Jon Lajoie
Muthafuckin' Ace of Bass.

19. BONUS TRACK - Stuff Your Ballot Box - Two Man Gentlemen Band
Ukelele riot! A uke, a kazoo, and left-of-the-dial innuendo all pile together to make for a pretty great bonus track.

Fourth Wednesday Treaty

At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
