Alcohol August 2007

The junior compilation was released without too many glitches and much smoother than the premier. Although, others have still yet to post their top picks from July and the incentive to continue the Fourth Wednesday Series is beginning to dwindle.

"1. Crown Victoria - Robbers on High Street
Yet another ChipperDemon mix hits the ground running with a strong start, and as repetitive as I'm sure I'm starting to sound with some of these comments, I'm really digging the vintage organ sound here.

2. Back in Your Head - Tegan and Sara
The simple but hooky piano riff that opens this poppy, playful song grabbed me immediately.

3. Happy Together - The Turtles
...and the upbeat onslaught builds to this crescendo. All these decades later, this is still one of the most enduring, euphoric choruses of any pop song on my radar, and no matter how many times I've heard

"Happy Together", the ba-ba-bas still make me melt. I wish some of their other songs -- especially "Elenore", another longtime favorite -- were as deservedly appreciated as this one has been.

4. Put a Penny in the Slot - Fionn Regan
A spare and lovely segue.

5. Take My Heart - Soko
Does this count as part of the International Tweexcore Underground? After repeatedly listening to Soko sing about murder, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to nustle up next to the syrupy sweet

strings, delicately plinking xylophone, and precious, lullabye vocals in "Take My Heart".

6. My Third House - Kings of Leon
Ha. Those Diamond Dave yelps caught my attention straight off the bat.

7. Son's Gonna Rise - Citizen Cope
Gotta admit that this is a little too Everlast for my tastes.

8. Stop the Bus - Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
I like the way that the verses slowly smolder, although the country-tinged Sheryl Crow chorus seems a little too straightforward. If this wasn't a hit in ClearChannel's neck of the woods, it really ought to

have been. I'm not the elitist sort to sneer at this as inherently being a bad thing, but this is one of the most accessible, mainstream sounding songs I've come across on one of these ChipperDemon mixes.

9. Hop a Plane - Tegan and Sara
Nice to see Tegan and Sara swoop back in a second time with this pogo-worthy, infectiously poppy rock song.

10. The Price & Style - Robbers on High Street
A more relaxed and subdued encore by Robbers on High Street.

11. Close Call - Rilo Kiley
Rilo Kiley is another band that, for no reason in particular, I've never given the attention they deserve. I've been told for a while that as much as I fawn over Neko Case, I really ought to be doing the

same for Jenny Lewis. It's not love at first listen, but I definitely like it.

12. Y Control - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I'm guessing I'm spinning an early mix from the ChipperDemon archives seeing as how "Y Control" isn't listed on the blog. The world at large can heave a sigh of relief that it'll probably never suffer the

sight of me dancing, but if I were to feel up to embarrassing myself like that, this raw, new wave-inflected track would probably be the sort of song to do it.

13. Hot (Missy Elliot Remix) - Ratatat
Not really feeling this one. Maybe Thursday morning and rap don't mesh together all that well for me, although I do like that four or five note warbling synth riff.

14. Gimmie Some Salt - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I really need to dust off Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's debut again; they still come up in my iPod, of course, and I get much too excited whenever "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" rears its head in

rotation, but I don't think I've given the CD itself a whirl in a year or two. "Gimmie Some Salt" is definitely another standout, and it's nice to see it pop up on this mix.

15. Helpless Fool For Love (Patrick Wolf Remix) - Annie
I think I'm distracted by the lack of dynamics. Whatever this track was sourced from is all mid-range...no heft to the bass, kinda flat overall, and saddled with that scratchy, low-bitrate streaming mp3

sound. I guess I'm in a pop mood this morning, and nothing about "Helpless Fool for Love" really hooks me in.

16. Bitches in Tokyo - Stars
Stars comes up as a recommendation in iTunes quite a lot for me, so it's nice to finally hear something of theirs more substantial than a 30 second sample. I love how the layers of guitars and chirping

synth suddenly thunder in; I was expecting it to stay kind of low-key. My weakness for the sort of knob-twiddling analog synthesizers that close it out is pretty well established by this point.

17. Ice Cream - New Young Pony Club
As a random coincidence that's really not worth noting at all, my best friend from back when I lived in Florida sent me a mix CD for my birthday last year that had "The Bomb" by New Young Pony Club on it.

Hmmm. As for "Ice Cream", it didn't really make an impression even my second time through. It's not bad, but I'm kind of struggling to come up with anything to say about it one way or the other.

18. Blah Blah Blah - Say Hi to Your Mom
That breathy, half-whispered "...and I am going to drink your blood" is kind of eerie, especially against the dark, subdued keyboard and straightahead beat.

19. If You're Into It - The Flight of the Conchords
Kind of a smirking way to close out the mix."

Fourth Wednesday Treaty

At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
