THURSDAY, JANUARY 29TH, 2009
It's the time of the half year again, Best of the Rest January 2009 has arrived and oh so good it is. As usual there are some songs that seem a mystery to have not been included in a monthly collection while others, well, that's why they are in the "rest" category. Some ChipperDemon favorites this time around: Mason Proper's "Lock and Key," Hooray for Earth's "Want Want Want," and McCarthy Trenching's "Roasting Song."
Tracklist as follows:
1.
Mr. Understanding - Pete & The Pirates
(lyrics)
A typical fantastic start track, "Mr. Understanding" gets any listener ready for a series of bopping melodies. Pete & the Pirates first appeared way back in October 07 with "Knots" and it's a sad affair that this track, released in January 08, sat in music playlists left alone until a year later. |
2.
I Love You, You Imbecile - Pelle Carlberg featuring Ida Maria
(lyrics)
This is just one of the happy tracks that ChipperDemon had no heart to ignore. Plucking at the happy heart beat skipping strings, "I Love You, You Imbecile" really de-glorifies while glorifying one of the strongest emotions. The fact that it's a duet only makes it one of the best realistic love songs of the year. |
3.
Teeth - Conversion Party
(lyrics)
During the month of November Conversion Party was originally considered but was left out of the mix. Teeth is really gritty and quite a contrast from the previous love diddy, but sets an image and tells a story that is identifiable and enjoyable in that dark way. |
4.
Ain't It Strange - Dr. Dog
(lyrics)
When Dr. Dog's album Fate came out, it was impossible to get too much of Dr. Dog. There wasn't enough minutes to spare on the December cd for one more Dr. Dog song. It was hard not to litter this Best of the Rest with Dr. Dog but eventually all the songs were worn down to some favorites and Ain't It Strange was a surprising top song. |
5.
Tallest Building in Hell - Jared Mees & the Grown Children
(lyrics)
Jared Mees was another artist that when found, it was hard to stop listening to. It took great deliberation in December to decide the tracks that made it while "Tallest Building in Hell" is happy addition to this compilation. "You still laugh in your sleep, I take that seriously" will infectiously wrap itself into your ear drums and cross your mind the next time you witness someone sleeping and a smile appears on their face. Also, "I've been told that the tallest building in Hell has an awesome view of the Emerald City" is just a fantastic lyric.

6.
Something is Not Right with Me - Cold War Kids
(lyrics)
It took a long time for this song to become ChipperDemon approved. After a few listens it somehow just became a favorite. Maybe it's the persistent, "Something is not right with me!" that finally just fit. The lyric, "I tried to call you collect, you said you would not accept, your friends are laughing 'cause nobody uses payphones" is just beautiful. The image of sitting at a payphone with a bunch of girls giggling and pointing in the background pointing a this don't give a crud punk... something's not right but worth while. |
7.
Lock and Key - Mason Proper
(lyrics)
A ChipperDemon favorite; it could be the electric guitar and soft vocals to start or maybe it's the ebb and flow of the drums and piano that keep it catchy while still slightly slow and melodic. The song stands alone musically leaving it hard to pay attention to the lyrics, however, "we are the wind tonight, blowing up, blowing down, blowing left and right... we put that chill in your bones tonight... take that lock and key and shove it" will stand out and tie the song together as a solid masterpiece. |
8.
I've Been Loving You Too Long - Otis Redding
(lyrics)
It's not rare for a blues classic to make it's way into a ChipperDemon daily playlist and Otis Redding just deserves it. "With you my life has been so wonderful." |
9.
Jedi - Melpo Mene
(lyrics)
This is perhaps not the best recording of this song but the intro just has an elemant to it that prepares a listener for a song about Star Wars. While the attraction, for ChipperDemon, isn't the song reference but the melodic somberness of the song just sounds so wonderful. "I'm sorry of I'm low, but where did my days go?" Also, the female background vocals also add a loveliness to it. |
10.
German Love - Starfucker
(lyrics)
It's probably no surprise that this song didn't make it onto the September CD when it was originally released. It's simplistic nature kept it alive in the in the playlists, though. It's just one of the songs that ChipperDemon finds itself listening to with enjoyment for the sake of just listening to a song and not thinking much about it. |
11.
Want Want Want - Hooray For Earth
(lyrics)
The intro to this song makes it a catch alone. The ensemble of distorted guitar then clashing symbols that all haults just before the lyrics that breathe the sound of New Order then breaks into something altogether singing out "You could all meet my demands." However, the lyric, "What's done is done, what's said is said, I could spend my life in bed" is perhaps one of the best lyrics of the compilation. |
12.
Kids - MGMT
(lyrics)
A long time enjoyed song but not quite loved until all of the covers came out that this collection just had to pay tribute to the original. The Lil' Kim mix still remains the best. |
13.
Hurry, Hurry - Conversion Party
(lyrics)
Probably the best Conversion Party song, "Hurry, Hurry" is the perfect balance of raw voice, simple guitar and piano combo with a whatever attitude. "This is my just smoking cigarettes... it's all just tits and ass, it's all just tits and ass." It is just tits and ass in the end, isn't it? Yes, a simplistic fantastic song indeed. |
14.
Magnetic Hill - Land of Talk
(lyrics)
One of the few female tracks of this collections, Land of Talk's had an early appearance in the beginning of ChipperDemon with their debut album. For some reason, Land of Talk's most recent work never made it onto an actual CD. "Magnetic Hill" may just not be a strong song but it's catchy enough and definitely enjoyable, and here is properly plays. |
15.
Good Friend - Plants & Animals
(lyrics)
ChipperDemon has to like any song with a chorus lyric, "I want to dance." With that said, Plants & Animals present this song with a proper balance of lyrical strength ("It takes a good friend to say you've got your head up your ass") and music complexity, making it an easy song to just connect with and enjoy. |
16.
Duet with the Northern Sky - Sleepy Sun
(lyrics)
While always impartial to duets, that could be source of this songs strength. The thing that makes this song special is the beautiful combination of a male and female voice talking to eachother through song. It's really just a lovely combination of voices and innocence belowing out over a guitar and morocas. |
17.
Wake to Believe - Liz Durrett
(lyrics)
There were two Liz Durrett songs that were in consideration for this precious spot on the compilation. It's hard to say why this song was chosen as they were fairly similar sound wise, however, "Wake to Believe" was eventually chosen. Liz Durrett's voice is somewhat haunting in a beautiful way. "You're prison is all I'll know." The intermittent violin also leans the song into a complexity and mysterious song altogher. |
18.
Sold Me Out - The Danks
(lyrics)
For pick-me-up sake, The Danks' energy pops out providing a little umph to the end of the compilation. The song should not be treated as just a melody pump-up but really appreciated for it's greatness. However, the brilliance of the song is that is just has this cheerful quality that cannot be ignored. |
19.
Roasting Song - McCarthy Trenching
(lyrics)
This is simply a great male lead but female enhanced song. The female voice comes in at just the right time. The message of the song is also just so sweet and pleasant. A song about sleepovers, playing music and just wanting the company of someone else, what more is there to ask? And for barbecue lovers, since the song is about roasting barbecue, there's just more to love. "Make it take all day, make it last all night, how I wish you would stay, now it looks like you might." |

I Have Taste in Music Ballot For each compilation:
A few suggestions of thought while listening:
- What song gets stuck in your head the easiest (you mind it, you don't mind it)?
- What song do you skip to listen to first?
- Is there good transition between certain songs?
- Do you wish you created any of the songs?
- Are you jubilant, chipper or smug about it?

Fourth Wednesday Treaty
At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
