You're Too Hot and I'm Too Hungry to Wait

In honor of the ridiculous heat of the South and the foods that stay hot for that second too long, July's CD is titled and ready for jubilant and judging ears.

This month's compilation is dominated by three artists; Little Jackie, The Black Kids, and Lykke Li. Both The Black Kids and Lykke Li have appeared on ChipperDemon CDs before, however, this month they have come out with official releases of their new albums revealing some hidden jems that the ChipperDemon just had to share. Little Jackie, on the other hand, is a brand new sound to ChipperDemon and is one not to be forgotten. This month's CD has a bit of a throwback sound to it with beats dedicated to a more 80s thrill and a 90s hip hop beat while also having one of those sounds similar to the slower ChipperDemon collections such has November or December. "1. Cryin' for the Queen - Little Jackie That's a pretty slick '70s groove this song is anchored around. 2. Hurricane Jane - The Black Kids The chorus sounds like indie dance-pop from the here and now, but if I'd only heard a verse out of context, I'd have no trouble picturing this sandwiched between the Thompson Twins and Tears for Fears on Casey Kasem's weekly top 40 circa 1984. While I'm belting out random comparisons to different eras/genres of music, that synth has a distinctively mid-'90s West coast hip-hop sound to it. 3. Breaking It Up - Lykke Li A friend of mine was sifting through the ChipperDemon archives in my car this past weekend, and her head nearly exploded like something out of 'Scanners' when she saw Lykke Li pop up so many times on this CD. There's enough overlap between ChipperDemon and what's piled onto her iPod that she decided you're her new best friend, so if you're ever pestered on Facebook by someone named Britteni, that's the rambling explanation. 4. White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes / 5. Sea So - The Gang I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I misread your liner notes (even after double-checking!) and thought you were saying that the electrified rock of "Sea So" was by Fleet Foxes. This confused me. Why, I have no idea, since I've heard "White Winter Hymnal" over and over again in the wild like most of the free world has by this point. Despite the inexplicable confusion, I really like both of these songs. 6. Burn Bridges - The Grates Love, love, love it, especially the bridge where it's nothing but a flurry of toms, handclaps, and chanted vocals. The lead vocal kind of reminds me of "Trapped in a Box"-era No Doubt. 7. Partie Traumatic - The Black Kids I'm really digging that whirring synth, and that fairly dramatic shift around halfway in really grabbed my attention. 8. Dance, Dance, Dance - Lykke Li Unconventional but infectious: clacking percussion I couldn't quite identify, that bass sound (upright? maybe it's a plucked cello?), and the thin, girlish vocal that are gradually reinforced by horns and layers of harmonies. 9. The Stoop - Little Jackie A windows-down-crank-up-the-radio summer breeze. 10. Samantha Secret Agent - All Girl Summer Fun Band Hey, they were on Magic Marker Records! Some of my best friends from Clemson were labelmates with them. "Samantha Secret Agent" almost sounds as if it's transitioning into an altogether different song thirty seconds in. I really like this track, and this reminds me that I need to make it a point to try to turn you onto Hot Pursuit at some point. 11. Modern Nature - Sondre Lerche A timelessly classic poppy headbob. I really like the upbeat acoustic guitar, the bridge with the clacking percussion, and the interplay between the male and female vox. Bonus points for sneaking "Technicolor" into the chorus. 12. When Water Comes to Life - Cloud Cult I'm very impressed by the orchestral overture, and the vocals -- once they do swoop in -- kind of bring to mind The Flaming Lips. 13. I Wish I Had an Evil Twin - The Magnetic Fields The strings make for a nice followup to the Cloud Cult track. I haven't followed The Magnetic Fields as closely as I ought to, and I'll admit to having a tough time getting past the vocals here, so for my money, They Might Be Giants' similarly titled track off "Apollo 18" wins the battle of the Left-of-Center Indie Rock Evil Twin Songs. 14. I'm Making Eyes at You - The Black Kids Another strong retro-inflected track. The poking keyboard in the verses sounds a lot like the keys in "Close to Me" by The Cure, and that's hardly a bad thing. The influence of "Close to Me" sounds even more pronounced the second time through... 15. Far Away - Cut Copy It's as if The Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran were tossed into a cuisinart, someone mashed "Purée" and held the button down for three minutes straight, and this is the '80s synthpop smoothie that poured out. 16. The World Should Revolve Around Me - Little Jackie I know it's a wink of a rhetorical question, but the mighty Egg McMuffin predates Chicken McNuggets by a little over a decade. 17. Do Or Don't - All My Pretty Ones I was liking this song well enough as it is, but the whistling put it over the top. 18. Alright, Okay - Ryan Auffenberg Songs like this made me decide a couple of years ago that I desperately needed to buy a banjo, but the Great Banjo Gambit of 2007 has yet to bear any fruit." posted by Adam on Thursday, March 26th, 2009 at 12:27 PM.
