A Year's Worth of Treasured Trash

About 6 months ago ChipperDemon released the best of the rest 2007, which was a compilation of songs that were at one time in consideration for a monthly CD but for some reason did not make it. For the last CD of ChipperDemon's first year of existence another 6 month collection of songs was produced in place of the traditional new songs of the month.

"1. Sick of Goodbyes - Sparklehorse
The half-belched wah opening grabbed me right off the bat, and that buzzing guitar jangle and the straightahead rock stomp of the rhythm section make for yet another strong start to a ChipperDemon set.

2. I Love You All the Time (Acoustic) - Oh No! Oh My!
I've never been overly keen on that brittle acoustic-electric sound, but it doesn't overwhelm the song. Bonus points for dusting off the mighty tambourine.

3. Good Day - Jukebox the Ghost
The interplay between the nimble piano, that clicking percussion, and those chunky, distorted blasts of guitar make for another immediate hook. I love how dynamic the song is, tearing down unpredictable paths rather than recycling the same chords and patterns time and again, especially the organ and that "My Sharona"-esque guitar that closes it out.

4. Stay - The Dora Steins
I usually think of xylophone (or vibes or whatever that is) as belting out more of a twee sound -- not that that's altogether a bad thing -- but the slightly throaty vocals have a sense of longing that keep it rooted elsewhere. "Stay" is cute and sweet but not precious, and that's not always an easy juggling act.

5. Lights Out - Santogold
That headbobbing bass groove is absolutely infectious.

6. Rule Breaker - Ashlee Simpson
I think I do want some beef, actually. I'll admit to being kind of fascinated by that dreamlike, borderline-psych-pop break around the 2:15 mark that sets it apart from being just another dance-pop track.

7. Kill the Director - The Wombats
Another Jones Soda and jelly bean bender of indie-pop. British colour, layers of harmonies, kinda distorted bass, and whacking the holy hell of the hi-hat really can't go wrong.

8. Cradle - The Joy Formidable
Again, I'm really digging the bass sound here, and I love it when bass takes the stage front and center as a lead instrument rather than cower into the background. "Cradle" is aggressively poppy, and that's kind of the way I like it.

9. Werewolf - CocoRosie
It's so odd hearing these baby doll vocals squeak "suck dick". The lilting sound to the backing vox in the chorus is lovely, but the lead is too grating for me to comfortably trudge through the rest. It's...it's like Shirley Temple taking the stage in her 80s after getting a tracheotomy or something.

10. How Lucky We Are - Meiko
I'm kind of intrigued by the way the title is such an integral part of the song, and yet it's looking forward rather than a cheerful look at the here and now.

11. The Book of Right On - Joanna Newsom
The thick, meaty acoustic bass grabbed me, but...ack. Like CocoRosie, the stabbing vocals are much too much for me. I'm not keen on half of this block of songs, but there's a common sensibility to these four that group together nicely.

12. Separate and Ever Deadly - The Last Shadow Puppets
I'm loving the frantic, surfy, reverb-drenched guitars and the nimble snare work.

13. Fake Empire - The National
"Fake Empire" is a bit of a dirge for me at first, but I warmed up to it around the halfway mark when it took on more of a fully-fleshed out band sound. I think I'd be more fond of it with a third or fourth listen.

14. Sweet Darlin' - She and Him
As a lifelong devotee of '60s girl-pop, "Sweet Darlin'" was one of the most instantly engaging tracks from my first listen of She and Him's debut and on. "I Was Made for You" and the ukelele-driven "Black Hole" are two standouts for me that haven't clawed their way onto ChipperDemon yet.

15. Terrible Angels - CocoRosie
I feel like I should be able to instantly rattle off the name of the toy, videogame, or whatever it is that's making that screeching sound; it sounds torturously familiar. I greatly prefer this vocal style to the other CocoRosie track on this CD.

16. Turn Around - The Beau Brummels
I started to write how authentic The Beau Brummels' retro-folk rock sound is until I searched Google and learned that it sounds so convincingly '60s because...well, it is. Nosing around, I recognize some of their other songs, although their chart toppers have more of a British Invasion inflection to them than this.

17. I've Underestimated My Charm (Again) - The Black Kids
A cheery, retro-inflected headbob, and that direction it careens off into in the last 75 seconds -- again sounding an awful lot like '60s girl-pop -- is such a sugar rush.

18. Walk in the Park - Oh No! Oh My!
This is a terrific choice for a follow-up even though it's more acoustic-oriented than the electrified "I've Underestimated My Charm". This is a skip through the grass on a bright, sunny day, and it's by far my favorite of the two Oh No! Oh My! tracks on here.

19. Let's Dance to Joy Division - The Wombats
From the unrestrained, overcaffeinated pop-euphoria to that angular, post-punk guitar to its devastatingly witty title, I fell head over heels for "Let's Dance to Joy Division" when I first heard it last summer, and I'd probably point to it as one of my ten favorite songs from the class of '08.

20. Broken Boy Soldiers - The Raconteurs
The throbbing bass and gingerly plucked acoustic guitar around the 2 minute mark really grab me for some reason.

21. Austere - The Joy Formidable
"Austere" is another song where I'm enthralled by the progression: being so intensely driven by bass, the guitars crashing in around a minute into it, and that thunderous breakdown near the end.

22. Seagulls - The Boderick
I also like the way "Seagulls" transitions from choppy guitars and piano to the snaking guitar and bass once the bridge rolls around.

23. Tired of This Life - Dawn Landes
The sweet, lovely harmonies make for a wonderful close to this CD."

Fourth Wednesday Treaty

At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
