Welcome Home Josie - July 2007 was the first of ChipperDemon's Fourth Wednesday Series and it was an over anticipated premier mix CD jirating the people of Greenville and can be purchased with one single soul, from wherever. If you have a soul to spare (ChipperDemon doesn't care where it comes from, yours, a homeless "person's" (we're not sexist here) or your mom's) then you got yourself access to the first CD and the ones of the future.

"Ha. When I hopped in my car and headed back home, "Hang Me Up to Dry" started playing on Sirius' "Alt Nation", so that's the third time I wound up hearing that song today.

Kind of along those same lines, I heard a Starfucker song on XMU a week or two ago and thought, "wow! I know someone who'd really like this" until I remembered twelve seconds later that it was on the tentative January mix."

"Oh, I didn't know this was the first ChipperDemon mix ever when I grabbed it out of the stack this morning. I feel as if I'm witnessing the dawn of the universe or something. Okay, not really, but...

1. Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis
Just from all the reviews, blog posts, etc., etc., etc. I'd read, I'd always kind of figured I'd like The Fratellis. The handful of songs I'd heard from them up to this point didn't really seem to live up to the hype, but I really dug "Chelsea Dagger", especially that "Stop Making Sense"-esque way the layers of instrumentation quickly and individually slink in: the snare shuffle, the thick, meaty bass, and the chunky guitars. The bridge kind of reminds me of a tamer version of Gob's cover of "Paint It Black"; if you're bored enough, click over to the 2:10 mark at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2We8rKbLug .

2. Hang Me Up to Dry - The Cold War Kids
"Hang Me Up to Dry" doesn't veer all that far away from The Cold War Kids' trademark sound, not that that's even a little bit of a bad thing. I'm always intrigued by this sort of atonal pounding away on the piano, and that's a trick I've noticed has been clawing its way into several bands' tackleboxes over the past few years. "Poison Flowers" by Mono Puff is one that springs to mind, and I'll make a concerted effort to stop comparing everything on here to random decade-old songs from now on.

3. Danger! High Voltage - Electric Six
A whole album of this would probably drive me nuts, but for just a couple of minutes at a time, I'm loving the mix of those ridiculously exaggerated, cartoonish vocals with the '70s bass and the buzzing-chainsaw-snarl of its guitars.

4. Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae
For the faintest glimmer of a moment, I'll admit to wondering if this was Lily Allen. I kind of like this sort of sound more when there's more of a bite to it, but "Put Your Records On" is a silky smooth summer groove that I'm sure fit comfortably on a July mix.

5. Sealings - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I can't remember how the Spider-Man III trailer actually went, but I don't have any trouble picturing this opening bass riff playing under a rapid-fire montage of flurries of punches, web-slingin', and ten-figure CGI effects.

6. I'll Kill Her - Soko
I started to write that I can't shake the feeling that the appeal of "I'll Kill Her" would vanish without that thick French accent, although come to think about it, Tegan and Sara could probably pull it off.

7. My Moon, My Man - Feist
Hesitantly upbeat, a little too simple and straightforward...I dunno, "My Moon, My Man" really didn't make an impression even after a couple of listens.

8. Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt - We Are Scientists
I really love that fascinatingly strange guitar sound that drives the song. Just from the CD, I didn't even recognize it as a guitar at first, but I gave the music video and a live performance from Letterman a whirl, and now I can't hear it as anything else.

9. Off the Record - My Morning Jacket
That bouncy reggae flavor of "Off the Record" really grew on me with a second listen, and the dubbier stuff in the extended outro really caught me off-guard in a good way. (I get to blame Andy Partridge's dub experiments like "Explode Together" for letting me pretend as if I have the slightest idea what I'm talking about here.)

10. Brass Ring - The Broken West
If I closed my eyes, I really wouldn't have any problem picturing a band like The Raspberries -- some giddy, vintage power-pop act -- tearing through "Brass Ring". Oooh! I like that comparison: The Raspberries covering The Who's "The Kids Are Alright". The chaos at the end is so jarringly different, but I can't imagine it ending any other way and being nearly as effective.

11. Whistle for the Choir - The Fratellis
Breezy and retro-flavored, "Whistle for the Choir" is more subdued than "Brass Ring" but fits comfortably alongside it. The sing-song nursury rhyme vocals sound a little Moldy Peaches-ish at first, and that's kind of intriguing. The whistling is what really sells it for me.

12. We Used to Vacation - The Cold War Kids
That interplay between the throbbing bass and the lower keys on the piano coupled with the rattlesnake percussion grabbed me right off the bat.

13. Elephant Gun - Beirut
Accordion! I can almost picture myself getting beer splashed on my sneakers as I nudge my way through a rowdy Irish pub. Those horns remind me so much of Neutral Milk Hotel.

14. Gold Lion (Acoustic) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I know you turned me onto Native Korean Rock, so this really shouldn't shock me, but I'm still so used to thinking of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs as being so raw and visceral that I continue to be surprised by just how well they translate to being stripped down and acoustic.

15. Baby's Romance - Chris Garneau
I have to admit to not being terribly fond of the vocals.

16. Whatever - Oasis
This sort of colossal, sweeping, anthemic pop song is exactly what I've come to expect from Oasis, but I like it just the same.

17. New York, New York - The Fratellis
I'd bet this probably would've been relegated to a bonus track on a later ChipperDemon CD. I think this screechy cover kinda loses something not actually being there.

18. Charm School - Bishop Allen
Hey! A jangly sugar rush -- complete with female backing vox and handclaps! -- to close out the first mix."

Fourth Wednesday Treaty

At the dawn of innoVation MAdLorD and ChipperDemon signed the Fourth Wednesday Treaty; MAdLorD would stop throwing thunderbolts (short circuiting the dinosaur robots) and ChipperDemon would quit with the trickery (snatching souls: see Twilight Zone Episode #6 Escape Clause) under the condition that the ChipperDemon would provide a musical selection every Fourth Wednesday.
